Information about CBAP

Starting point was a European project concerning community based addiction prevention that started in seven Luxembourgian communities in 1996. Development, implementation and evaluation of such a program were to the fore. In a second step a network focusing the exchange of knowledge and experience in Europe was built up. Different programs of community based addiction prevention were presented and evaluated to infer common guidelines for quality assurance. The experience from community programs in different countries concerned in the project revealed the special role of volunteers in communities. Hence, a third project was developed that focused on motivation of volunteers in drug addiction prevention in general. Based on a European questioning, an analysis of the current state of research and a workshop, first strategies supporting the motivation of volunteers in drug addiction prevention were elaborated.

Four phases of the project :

1st phase:

Pilotproject "Suchtpräventioun an der Gemeng"

A pilot project called " Suchtpräventioun an der Gemeng " (Addiction prevention in the community) started in 1996. In seven Luxembourg communities, prevention groups consisting of volunteers were formed which planned and carried out a large number of addiction preventive programmes and held events in their communities. The results of the evaluation showed that citizens' awareness of drug related problems had increased and among other things, the opinion-forming communication on the subject had increased.
2nd phase:

"European knowledge transfer and continuation of the pilot project"

Within the scope of a follow-up project, a European forum for exchange of information regarding community based addiction prevention was established. Organisations from different countries brought together their concepts and experiences concerning community based projects in the field of addiction prevention. Knowledge transfer was realized by analysing the literature, holding conferences and establishing an internet platform focusing on planning and evaluating community based addiction prevention in Europe.

3th phase:

"Motivating volunteers in addiction prevention"

The European project "Motivating volunteers in drug addiction prevention" was the third follow-up project, which focused on motivation of volunteers in addiction prevention in general. On the base of a European study, a literature analysis and a workshop important aspects of the motivation of volunteers in the area of addiction prevention has been worked out.

4th phase:

"MoQuaVo - Motivation and Qualification of Volunteers in addiction prevention"

Die The experience from the last project pointed out that common factors for motivation and qualification for volunteers besides regional differences are important. Also a need for guidelines in the practical field of addiction prevention can be identified.
The current project is working out the topics about motivation and qualification in a more elaborated way with the aim to write down concrete strategies and guidelines in practical manuals.
